7 Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Baby Wearing

Aug. 06, 2024

To some mothers baby wearing comes naturally, to some, they love the contact sleep and can carry their baby all day, to others it’s a way to be productive and allow their baby to feel safe on them while they try to do the dishes. Wherever you stand in the spectrum baby wearing is not only comforting for baby, it can also be for mom and its scientifically documented that baby wearing is healthy.

To my fellow mama:

You’re not spoiling your baby by baby wearing. You are not slowing their development down by baby wearing. You’re not over sheltering or enabling a baby/infant or toddler by baby wearing. You can ditch the mama guilt because evidence based research shows that baby wearing:

  1. Enhanced Bonding: According to a study published in the Journal of Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics, baby wearing promotes parent-infant bonding by increasing physical closeness and promoting secure attachment, leading to improved emotional well-being for both the parent and the baby.
  2. Regulated Sleep Patterns: Research conducted by the American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that infants who are carried close to their caregiver experience more regulated sleep patterns, potentially leading to improved sleep quality and duration for both the baby and the caregiver.
  3. Improved Cognitive Development: A study in the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health found that babies who are frequently carried in a baby carrier are more likely to experience enhanced cognitive development due to increased exposure to sensory stimuli and caregiver interaction.
  4. Reduced Colic and Reflux Symptoms: Baby wearing has been associated with decreased symptoms of colic and reflux in infants, as reported in a study published in Pediatrics. The upright position and gentle motion experienced during baby wearing can help alleviate discomfort and aid in digestion.
  5. Promotes Physical Development: According to research published in the Journal of Pediatrics and Child Health, baby wearing supports healthy physical development by providing infants with optimal positioning that promotes proper spine and hip development.
  6. Convenience and Mobility: Baby wearing allows caregivers to engage in daily activities while keeping their baby close, promoting physical activity and reducing stress associated with caring for an infant, as outlined in a study from the Journal of Midwifery & Women’s Health.
  7. Enhanced Breastfeeding Success: A study published in the Journal of Human Lactation suggests that baby wearing encourages breastfeeding success by facilitating easier and more frequent breastfeeding opportunities, leading to improved milk production and infant feeding satisfaction.
